PROGRAM Educating Nigerian Girls in New Enterprises (ENGINE)
The Educating Nigerian Girls in New Enterprises (ENGINE) is a 3 year program that aims to improve learning outcomes and economic status of marginalised adolescent girls aged 16-19 in the Northern Nigerian states of Kano, Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the metropolis of Lagos, Nigeria. ENGINE program will expose young out of school marginalised girls to life skill, business skill and finance training for a period of 9 month and thereafter establish them in value chains, while in school girls will be given additional training in academic subjects to improve their overall academic performance. ENGINE plans to conduct video documentary among target beneficiaries to document project impact throughout the life of the project.

Description of the ENGINE documentary production process
ENGINE intends to capture information about the beneficiaries, their parent, place of residence and environment before implementation commences and compare same with a post intervention video documentary so that achievement can be presented visually to target communities, stakeholders and donor, and used as an advocacy tool for sustainability and scale up. Documentary will also cover implementation phase where girls are receiving trainings in safe spaces and participating in savings groups across communities of intervention.

In school Girls
We support in school girls to
- Improve their academic performance by provision of extra classes on basic science subjects including English and Mathematics. Other session like life skills, business and financial education to prepare them for life after school
- Form girl forum/club that will be used to reinforce learning and also serve as an avenue for the girls to meet and share experience and best practices. Other activities may include debates, talks, drama, song, etc
- Form saving groups to encourage savings using the VSLA model.
Out of school Girls
We support in school girls to
- Learn about basic life and business skills, finance training and savings to prepare them for work.
- Form savings group to encourage savings using the VSLA model
- Form girl clubs/forum for girl to have peer to peer relationship and for sustainability
- Establish girls in value chains, with opportunities to sell Coke products or go for apprentice and internship opportunities

Scope of Work
The documentary expert will work under the supervision and close collaboration of ENGINE project team to perform the following tasks:
- Develop the overall concept and scenario of the documentary based on the relevant topics derived from project documents as well as interviews with Project staff, Partner staffs and other key stakeholders e.g. SBMCs, CAC, etc.
- Compose the documentary’s script and textual materials, and share these for review with the ENGINE Project Team.
- Ensure that the message of the documentary is conveyed in a way that is both strongly convincing and correct, as well as highly creative and aesthetically appealing.
- Filming is to take place at the four project states: Lagos, FCT, Kaduna and Kano, as appropriate in order to adequately reflect all relevant thematic areas in the footage.
- Ensure that logos of the Mercy Corps, donors and partners are clearly visible (following the appropriate logo policies and graphic standards) on the cover of the DVD as well as on the title page of the documentary.
- To prepare [draft] documentaries in 15 minutes video in DVD format as well as a 5 minute YouTube clip and submit to Mercy. Corps Nigeria for final feedback before the deadline of the contract.
- Finalize the videos as according to the feedback provided by ENGINE project team.
- Ensure that both formats are available in English.
- Prepare reports on the results of the production.
Responsibilities
ENGINE team will monitor and scrutinize the quality and branding aspects of the videos and assist the consultant to coordinate the field activities through its partner staff and beneficiaries. The following will be specific responsibilities of the successful bidder:
- Identify thematic cases for documentation.
- Organize a coordination meeting with project team.
- Coordinate with project staffs for the field visit to capture the footage.
- Provide feedback when and where necessary.
- Make inputs to draft and finalize videos.
Proposed Timeline and Budget
The total working days for the production will be approximately 3 months i.e. one month each for baseline, midline and endline respectively. The consultant will propose a detailed workplanand timeline which will be finalized with ENGINE Team. Note that, cycle 1 for OSG implementation runs from August 2014 to April 2015 and cycle 2 runs from February to September 2015, also cycle1 for ISG implementation runs from October 2014 to June 2015 while cycle 2 runs from January to December 2015.
The ideal individual/organisation
Only legally registeredorganisation (attach certificate of registration) in Nigeria or individual, with extensive experience in the production and editing of video documentary. Experience in production of documentary covering a development project isan added advantage. The consultant should have relevant combination of academic, professional qualifications and ample experiences on audio-visual recording, editing, and media production; clear understanding of the technical aspects of video making process and understanding of social development field is required along with experiences on using different tools and techniques in developing appropriate and quality audio-visual products.
Competencies:
- Excellent technical capacity to ensure smooth and highâquality production (including availability of professional video production equipment and software)
- Ability to work in a highly creative manner, conveying complex messages by use of striking images.
- Excellent social skills and demonstrated ability to work successfully with a wide range of different stakeholders, (e.g. children, youth, community women, etc) to be flexible and respond to changes to text as part of the review and feedback process
- Experience working in developing countries (particularly with filmmaking/editing/producing) is preferred
- Excellent planning and organizational skills, including demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience in working with Children and understanding of the rights and obligations of the Child would be an advantage.
- Fluency in English is required, but communication level knowledge in Hausa and Yoruba would be an advantage.
